AI Engineer Salary NYC 2025: Market Rates, Equity & Negotiation Tactics

FDE Coach EditorialJuly 16, 202610 min read

The NYC AI Engineer Market in 2025

New York has become the second-most aggressive market for AI talent after San Francisco, and in some ways it’s weirder. Hedge funds and banks—Citadel, Two Sigma, JPMorgan—are bidding directly against OpenAI, Anthropic, and a wave of early-stage startups. That liquidity warps the salary curve in ways you don’t see on the West Coast.

Three factors define the 2025 market:

  1. Base salary compression at the top. The $250K–$300K base band has become standard for senior ICs, not exceptional. The real differentiation is equity and bonus structure.
  2. The “AI Engineer” title premium. A role labeled “AI Engineer” now commands 8–15% more than an equivalent “Software Engineer” or “Machine Learning Engineer” title, even when the actual work overlaps significantly.
  3. Return-to-office leverage. NYC firms with mandatory 4–5 day in-office policies are paying a 10–20% premium over hybrid shops to fill seats.

We pulled data from Levels.fyi, Glassdoor, Offer HN, and direct offer letters shared by FDE Coach readers to build the tables below. Every number is a 2025 figure, not a projection.

Salary by Experience Level

These are total annual cash (base + target bonus), excluding equity. We’ve normalized across company tiers; the next section breaks that down.

Level25th PercentileMedian75th Percentile90th Percentile
Entry-Level (0–2 yrs)$130,000$155,000$185,000$210,000
Mid-Level (3–5 yrs)$170,000$205,000$245,000$280,000
Senior (6–9 yrs)$220,000$265,000$320,000$370,000
Staff / Principal (10+ yrs)$280,000$340,000$420,000$500,000+

Entry-level reality check: The “$155K median” masks a bifurcation. New grads landing at FAANG-adjacent labs or top hedge funds start at $180K–$220K total cash. Startups and agencies cluster at $120K–$145K. If your first offer is below $140K base in NYC, you’re leaving money on the table—or the equity package is genuinely exceptional.

Senior jump: The leap from mid-level to senior is the steepest in the market. A senior AI engineer who can ship production RAG pipelines, fine-tune models, and design evaluation harnesses is worth roughly $60K/year more than a mid-level generalist. That gap widens every quarter.

For context on what a senior AI engineer actually ships in a week, see our breakdown of what a Forward Deployed Engineer delivers in a 60-hour week at an AI startup. The output expectations justify the comp.

Salary by Company Tier

This is where NYC gets interesting. The same engineer can see a $200K swing in total compensation depending on which building they walk into.

Company TierBase RangeBonus RangeTotal CashEquity (Annualized)
Tier 1: OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta AI, Google DeepMind (NYC)$220K–$350K10–25%$250K–$420K$150K–$600K+
Tier 2: Citadel, Two Sigma, HRT, Jane Street$250K–$400K50–150%$375K–$800K+N/A (cash-heavy)
Tier 3: Big Tech (non-AI-lab), Bloomberg$180K–$260K10–20%$200K–$310K$40K–$120K
Tier 4: Series B–C startups (50–200 ppl)$160K–$220K0–15%$160K–$250K$30K–$150K (paper)
Tier 5: Seed–Series A, agencies$130K–$180K0–10%$130K–$195K0.5–2.0% equity

Tier 2 is the NYC outlier. Hedge funds and prop shops don’t give RSUs—they write bonus checks tied to PnL. A strong year can push a senior AI engineer past $800K cash. The trade-off: you’re building internal tools, not shipping products. For some engineers that’s a feature; for others it’s a career dead-end.

Tier 4 equity is mostly illiquid paper. A startup offering $150K/year in options at a $200M valuation sounds generous until you model dilution, preference stacks, and the 5–7 year liquidity horizon. We’ll break that math in the equity section.

Equity Structures That Actually Matter

Equity in NYC AI roles falls into three buckets. Know which one you’re holding before you sign.

1. Public Company RSUs (Tier 1 & 3)

The cleanest structure. You get a dollar-value grant that vests over 4 years (1-year cliff, then quarterly). A $600K grant over 4 years = $150K/year in liquid stock. Negotiate the grant value, not the share count—the board sets the conversion price.

Watch for: Refreshers. At Meta and Google, annual refreshers can equal 25–50% of your initial grant. At Amazon, they’re notoriously stingy. Ask your recruiter for median refresher data for your level.

2. Private Company Options (Tier 4–5)

You’re buying the right to purchase shares at a strike price. The spread between strike and fair market value is your theoretical gain. Key questions:

  • What’s the 409A valuation? That’s the strike price floor.
  • What’s the preferred price? The last round’s share price. Your common stock is worth less than this.
  • What’s the liquidation preference? If investors have a 2x participating preferred, you might get zero even in a modest exit.

Rule of thumb for NYC startups: Discount the headline equity value by 60–80% for risk, dilution, and illiquidity. A $500K option grant over 4 years is realistically worth $100K–$200K in expected value.

3. Profit-Share / Carried Interest (Tier 2)

Hedge funds pay cash bonuses tied to fund performance. No vesting schedule beyond the year-end. The upside is uncapped; the downside is zero bonus in a flat year. This structure rewards engineers who optimize for cash-on-hand, not wealth-building through equity.

Contract vs. Hourly Rates

Many NYC AI engineers shift to contract work after 3–5 years. The hourly math is compelling if you can manage self-employment overhead.

LevelW2 Hourly Equivalent1099 / C2C Rate
Entry-Level$65–$90/hr$85–$120/hr
Mid-Level$90–$130/hr$120–$170/hr
Senior$130–$175/hr$170–$230/hr
Staff+$175–$250/hr$230–$350/hr

The 1099 multiplier: Contract rates run 30–50% above W2 equivalents to cover self-employment tax, health insurance, and bench time between gigs. NYC firms are increasingly comfortable with remote contractors, but expect to show up on-site 1–2 days/week for the highest rates.

Agency arbitrage: Consulting firms bill clients $250–$400/hr for senior AI engineers and pay $100–$175/hr to the engineer. If you can source your own clients, you capture the spread. The multi-agent research assistant we built with Gemini Flash is exactly the kind of project that lands $200/hr+ contracts.

The AI Engineer vs. ML Engineer Pay Gap

This distinction matters more in NYC than anywhere else. The market is pricing these as two distinct roles:

DimensionAI EngineerML Engineer
FocusApplication-layer, API orchestration, RAG, agentsModel training, architecture design, research
Typical StackLangChain, LlamaIndex, vector DBs, FastAPIPyTorch, JAX, CUDA, distributed training
NYC Median Base$215,000$195,000
Premium8–15% over MLEBaseline

Why the premium? AI Engineers ship product-facing features on shorter cycles. A company can stand up a RAG pipeline in two weeks and show revenue impact. Training a custom model takes months and the ROI is uncertain. The market is rewarding speed-to-value.

That said, the ceiling for ML Engineers at the staff+ level is higher. If you can train frontier-scale models, you’re competing for the $500K–$1M+ roles at OpenAI and DeepMind. For most engineers, the AI Engineer path offers better risk-adjusted comp in the 0–8 year experience band.

Negotiation Tactics

NYC is a negotiator’s market in 2025. Companies have budgeted for AI roles aggressively, and hiring managers have headcount they’ll lose if they don’t fill it. Use that leverage.

1. The Competing Offer Script

Never say “I have another offer at $X.” Instead:

“I’m evaluating a few opportunities right now. Your team is my top choice, but I need to make the numbers work. Is there flexibility on base or equity to close the gap?”

This signals competition without anchoring to a specific number. Let them bid against themselves.

2. Exploit the Tier Gap

If you have a Tier 2 (hedge fund) offer for $350K cash and you’re negotiating with a Tier 1 AI lab, use it:

“I have a cash-heavy offer that’s hard to ignore. If you can bring the equity grant to $800K over 4 years, I’ll sign today.”

AI labs know they can’t match hedge fund cash. They can match on total comp with equity that might appreciate 10x. Make them do it.

3. The Sign-On Lever

Sign-on bonuses are the easiest lever for recruiters to pull. They come from a different budget bucket than base salary. If base is capped by internal bands, ask for a $30K–$75K sign-on. In NYC, $50K sign-ons for senior roles are common.

4. Ask for the Internal Salary Band

In NYC, employers with 15+ employees must disclose salary ranges in job postings under the pay transparency law. But those ranges are often absurdly wide ($150K–$350K). Ask the recruiter:

“What’s the internal level for this role, and what’s the midpoint of the band for that level?”

Once you have the midpoint, negotiate toward the 75th percentile. You’re an AI engineer in NYC—you’re not a median candidate.

FAQ

How much do AI engineers make in NYC? The median total cash compensation for an AI engineer in NYC is approximately $215,000 base salary plus bonus. Including equity, total compensation ranges from $180,000 at early-stage startups to over $600,000 at top AI labs and hedge funds.

What is a senior AI engineer salary in NYC? Senior AI engineers (6–9 years experience) command $220,000–$370,000 in total cash, with equity grants adding $100,000–$400,000+ annually at public and late-stage private companies.

What is the AI engineer hourly rate in NYC? Contract AI engineers bill $120–$350/hour depending on seniority. Senior ICs typically charge $170–$230/hour on 1099, while staff-level consultants can command $250–$350/hour.

How does a Machine Learning Engineer salary in NYC compare? ML Engineers in NYC earn a median base of approximately $195,000, roughly 8–15% less than AI Engineers at equivalent levels. The gap reflects market demand for application-layer AI skills over traditional ML training roles.

What skills justify the highest AI engineer salaries? Production experience with RAG architectures, LLM evaluation frameworks, agent orchestration, and vector database systems commands the highest premiums. Building a project like a fully local RAG chatbot over your PDFs with Ollama and Qdrant demonstrates exactly the skill set hiring managers pay top-of-band for.

Should I take higher cash or more equity in NYC? If you’re under 30 with low fixed expenses, bias toward equity at a Tier 1 AI lab—the upside is asymmetric. If you have a mortgage and kids, Tier 2 cash-heavy offers are the rational play. There’s no universal answer, but NYC’s cost of living makes cash liquidity more valuable here than in most markets.
