Scoping a shippable slice
Scope discipline and demo front-ends that protect the go-live date.
- The FDE path · Stage 6 of 6
- 30 min read
- 60 min hands-on
- Pro
What you'll be able to do
01- Explain why a thin vertical slice can go live and a horizontal layer cannot.
- Cut a use case along process, lane, document type and user group until it fits a fixed date and team.
- Define "shippable" as testable gates and refuse to call anything short of them a launch.
- Write a MoSCoW scope with an explicit out-of-scope list, and cost a change request in writing before anyone says yes.
- Choose a demo front-end and defend the line between demo and product, including analytics and accessibility basics.
Before you start
- Picking the wedge use case: the wedge you are now cutting down.
- Feasibility and data access, fast and Baselines and ROI you can defend: the data you can reach and the metric the slice must move.
- Acceptance criteria and sign-off and Approval gates and bounded autonomy.
The short version
A shippable slice is the thinnest piece of the real problem that runs end to end in production, for real users, measured, with a named owner supporting it. You cut along the shape of the work (process, lane, document type, user group), not one technical layer at a time. You write down what is in, what is out and why, and every later addition becomes a change request with a written cost. Demo front-ends show the slice; they are not the product.
- Slice vertically: every layer, narrow population.
- "Shippable" is a list of gates. Missing one means it is a demo or a pilot.
- The out-of-scope list is a deliverable, signed like the scope.
- Every change request gets an impact note before a decision.
- Honest demos use live data, show failures and refusals, and show the metric.
